Or complimenting somebody’s early-’80s Tercel, only to find out that it’s just an ugly old junk heap in their eyes and they think you’re being sarcastic, so they flip you off and drive away. Now I’m always hesitant to compliment a classic car.

You’re probably safe with Renaults and Yugos. About a 98% chance if it’s still running that the owner considers it a misunderstood classic and will take it well, having spent much effort and sanity in keeping it alive. Only about a 2% chance they’re so damn insane they’ll follow you home and eat your cat.
